What a web directory is
A web directory is a list of websites arranged by subject. Before search engines became the main way of finding sites, directories were a common starting point, and some are still maintained by editors who check each submission. Others accept almost any site, and the quality of what they list varies widely. A directory entry is not an endorsement by this site of the sites it lists, and a reader should judge each one on its own content.
The directories linked at the end of this page are listed as they were provided. They are included for completeness and are not a recommendation. A reader looking for authoritative material on cyber law should start with the official sources described in the page on cyber law resources.
How to judge a listed site
A few questions help. Does the site say who runs it and how to contact them? Does it cite the text of the law or official sources? Is the information dated, and does it reflect the changes in the law since 2009? Does it ask for money, personal data or a download before giving information? A site that cannot answer the first three questions, or that asks for the last, should be treated with caution.
The same care applies to links to services. Many sites that rank for legal questions are run by businesses that sell services, and their material may be written to attract clients rather than to explain the law. For the law itself, the guide to the IT Act 2000 and the DPDP Act 2023 set out the text and cite where each point comes from.
